Role of the LSL Specialist Mentor
Mentors are certified LSL Specialist professionals who use their experience and knowledge to help support and develop professionals seeking certification during the application process. All professionals seeking certification must be mentored by a certified LSL Specialist over the three-to-five-year period of certification.
What is a Mentor?
The role of the LSL Specialist mentor is to counsel and guide professionals seeking certification to prepare them for the LSL Specialist certification exam and to position them to be effective auditory-verbal practitioners. Mentors should review the current eligibility requirements and ensure adherence to the Principles of Certified LSL Specialists for the applicant’s intended designation. The mentor will provide structured feedback and guidance to professionals seeking certification upon observations of sessions and classes via the Attachment F-1: Mentor’s Observation Form. All mentors must be currently certified as a LSLS Cert. AVT or LSLS Cert. AVEd.

How do I Find a Mentor?
Professionals seeking a mentor for their certification period can find available mentors through the Locate a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist Directory.
Find a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist
If you are participating in the directory, please take 5 minutes to ensure your profile is complete. Information to add includes mentor status (are you accepting mentees for LSLS certification?), languages spoken (helps people in other countries connect with people who speak the same language), and teleservice options.
Visit www.agbell.org/logon to log in and update your profile in two easy steps:
- Click on the profile icon and select your name. That will take you to your profile.
- Select “Edit My Profile” to make sure we have the right information and save any changes you make.

Although it is recommended that applicants work with a mentor of the same intended designation when possible, LSL Specialists of either designation (LSLS Cert. AVEd or LSLS Cert. AVT) may mentor an applicant, regardless of the applicant’s intended designation.
